Biography of Lionel Messi
Lionel Andrés Messi, often considered one of the greatest footballers in history, was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. He showed prodigious talent from a young age, joining the local club Newell’s Old Boys. Diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency at age 10, his family struggled to afford treatment. At 13, he moved with his family to Spain after FC Barcelona offered to cover his medical expenses, joining their famed La Masia youth academy. Messi’s extraordinary skills quickly propelled him through the ranks, and he made his first-team debut at 17 in 2004. Over 17 years with Barcelona, Messi broke countless records, including becoming the club’s all-time top scorer with 672 goals in 778 games. He helped Barcelona win four UEFA Champions League titles, ten La Liga titles, and numerous other trophies, earning six Ballon d’Or awards during his time with the club.
In 2021, due to financial constraints, Barcelona could not renew his contract, and Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a free transfer. Although his time at PSG was short, he continued to deliver stellar performances, adding more goals and assists to his record. Internationally, Messi initially faced challenges with Argentina’s national team but ultimately led them to victory in the 2021 Copa América, his first major international trophy, and then crowned his career by winning the FIFA World Cup in 2022, where he won the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.
Off the field, Messi is known for his humility and dedication to his family. He is married to Antonela Roccuzzo, his childhood sweetheart, and they have three sons. Known for his philanthropy, he has supported various children’s hospitals and initiatives in Argentina and around the world. With global sponsorships and a massive fan following, Messi is one of the highest-earning athletes in the world and a football icon who continues to inspire millions.
